Dr. Steven Turkeltaub, a plastic surgeon in Scottsdale, explains how women can eliminate a sagging belly after childbirth.

Dr. Steven H. Turkeltaub discusses how abdominoplasty can address the effects of diastasis recti, a condition that is common among women after childbirth.

Scottsdale, AZ — Following pregnancy, women experience several substantial physical changes to their bodies. While many women accept these alterations as the price of motherhood, there are some changes that may cause low self-esteem or have an impact on postpartum depression. Scottsdale plastic surgeon Steven H. Turkeltaub, MD explains that some of the physical changes caused by pregnancy cannot be completely resolved with just a healthy diet and regular exercise. This can be both frustrating and distressing especially in women who have worked hard to restore their pre-pregnancy figure.

One common concern is a condition called diastasis recti, which occurs when the left and right abdominal muscles separate apart as a result of pregnancy, ultimately leading to the appearance of a belly “pooch.” Dr. Turkeltaub says a tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is the only way to reverse the effects of diastasis recti. “Exercise can improve the tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles after childbirth but it will not correct stretched out abdominal wall muscles nor will it bring the left and right rectus muscles close together again,” says Dr. Turkeltaub. He explains that when the abdominal wall has become separated or torn, it is best to seek an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who can perform a tummy tuck procedure in order to surgically tighten the muscles and provide a flatter and more firm abdomen. He also states that liposuction can be utilized during the procedure to help provide superior contouring.

Dr. Turkeltaub says there are several other physical changes that women often seek to reverse surgically since they have been unsuccessful with exercise and a healthy lifestyle alone. He notes that a mommy makeover can help address a myriad of concerns in a single, highly-customized procedure that can include abdominoplasty, breast lift, breast augmentation and more.

To ensure the best possible outcome after a tummy tuck, Dr. Turkeltaub recommends conducting thorough research to find the best board-certified plastic surgeon. He notes that it can be helpful to review the surgeon’s credentials, professional memberships, before-and-after photos and patient reviews to get a better idea of what to expect, but highly recommends scheduling a consultation with the surgeon to ultimately determine if they are the right fit.
