Having children can be one of the greatest gifts of life. Unfortunately, too often there is a significant price to pay. The changes your body goes through related to pregnancy and breastfeeding leave you with permanent structural and qualitative changes that can make it difficult, if not impossible, to regain your pre-pregnancy figure no matter how hard you try.

This is why Dr. Steven H. Turkeltaub offers the “Mommy Makeover” for our post-pregnancy patients. It can provide you with the means of restoring and obtaining a more attractive and alluring appearance through cosmetic plastic surgery.

What Exactly Is a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover is a combination of patient specific plastic surgery procedures that target and correct the changes of your body that occur as a result of having children, notably involving your abdomen and breasts. The goal is to help you to return to a more pre-pregnancy figure and possibly even better in some areas. Pregnancy affects your breasts, abdomen and even the distribution of body fat to varying degrees—so these are the areas that can be addressed. Other cosmetic procedures can also be performed at the same time to help you obtain the appearance that you have always desired.

What Are the Benefits of a Mommy Makeover?

A Mommy Makeover can offer numerous benefits for qualified patients, including:

  • Restoration of a Pre-Pregnancy Figure: A Mommy Makeover is designed to address regions of the body commonly affected by childbirth and breastfeeding, such as the breasts and abdomen.
  • Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence: Many women feel more confident and comfortable in their skin after their Mommy Makeover.
  • Customizable Treatments: The treatment plan can include a variety of procedures like tummy tuck, breast lift or augmentation, and liposuction, each of which can be tailored to meet individual needs.
  • Comprehensive Results: A Mommy Makeover addresses several areas in one series of procedures, reducing overall downtime compared to having multiple separate surgeries at different times.
  • Long-Lasting Results: If patients maintain a healthy lifestyle, the results of a Mommy Makeover can be quite long-lasting.

What Concerns Can a Mommy Makeover Address?

When your Mommy Makeover is performed by a highly qualified plastic surgeon, the following issues can be addressed:

  • Breast Sagging (Ptosis)
  • Diminished Breast Volume
  • Hanging Or Loose Skin
  • Stretched Abdominal Muscles
  • Unwanted Fat
  • Cellulite
  • Stretch Marks
  • Lines And Wrinkles

One of the most prominent benefits of a Mommy Makeover is its versatility. Dr. Turkeltaub can examine you and discuss your most pressing cosmetic concerns before creating a customized treatment plan.

What Is Included in a Mommy Makeover?

Your Mommy Makeover can, in essence, be precisely what you want it to be. It can be individualized to address your wish list—involving multiple areas of the body, if so indicated. That said, the top two areas treated in a Mommy Makeover are the abdomen and the breasts. Various other issues and regions of the body and face can also be addressed at the same time.

  • Abdominal Options

Changes in the appearance of the abdomen following pregnancy can range from minimally perceptible to marked laxity with considerable protuberance, loose hanging skin, diffuse stretch marks and an increased quantity of fat. In order to give you back a more sculpted and firm abdomen, cosmetic procedures such as a tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck and liposuction can be considered.

  • Breast Options

Many women lose the youthful firmness, shape and volume of their breasts and acquire stretch marks and drooping with pregnancy. Breastfeeding, including the total duration and the number of children, can exacerbate these problems. Some women will actually experience a permanent increase in breast size though they become very droopy and lose desirable shape. Cosmetic procedures that can effectively address these changes include a breast augmentation, a breast lift with or without implants and a breast reduction.

  • Body Options

In addition to the abdomen, liposuction can be performed on areas of your body such as the hips, thighs, knees and back to allow you to obtain even more sculpted and rewarding results. Procedures such as arm lift or thigh lift surgery can also contour the body and reduce the appearance of excess skin or hanging fat.

  • Facial Options

The combination of cosmetic procedures of the breast and abdomen that are most appropriate for you and are performed at one surgical setting constitutes a Mommy Makeover. Of course, you can elect to have other procedures done at the same time such as eyelid surgery. This one session rejuvenation of your body back to a more desirable shape can work wonders for your happiness, psyche, self-confidence and sense of attractiveness.

When Is the Best Time for a Mommy Makeover?

Once you have made the decision to pursue a Mommy Makeover, there are at least two issues with regard to the timing of it that should be considered. First, if you are planning to have an additional pregnancy in the relatively near future, you should consider delaying the procedure until after you are finished having children. The reason for this is because any additional pregnancies will often cause many of the same adverse effects on your body (possibly to a lesser degree) which consequently can have a negative effect on the results of a Mommy Makeover if one had already been done. If your breasts simply need an enlargement, it may be quite reasonable to pursue that procedure in the interim and fix up your tummy later.

The second issue as regards time is that for women who do not plan to have any more children, waiting at least six months after pregnancy and three to six months following the cessation of breastfeeding is typically considered ideal before undergoing a Mommy Makeover. These respective periods of time are usually long enough for elevated hormone levels to normalize, for stretched out tissue to tighten up as much as it will on its own and most pregnancy-associated weight gain to be lost. This provides for a more accurate assessment of your physical issues, greater precision in treatment and better and more stable long term results.

What Will Recovery from a Mommy Makeover Be Like?

Recovery from a Mommy Makeover will be influenced by factors such as the specific combination of procedures, the quantity and complexity of these treatments, the particular techniques utilized and skill with which each is conducted, the total operative time and the overall health and natural healing process of the individual. While both abdominal contouring and breast enhancement are generally performed, the amount of downtime and postoperative limitations a patient experiences will usually be dictated by the abdominal procedure employed. When a tummy tuck is included as part of a Mommy Makeover (which is virtually always the case), the majority of women will require around one to two weeks away from non-strenuous daily routines like office jobs, school or running errands. Rather than lying in bed or sitting stationary during this time, patients are advised to be up and moving around in order to facilitate recuperation and reduce the risk of developing blood clots in the legs and/or lungs.

True aerobic activities such as riding a stationary bike or using a treadmill should be avoided for approximately four weeks, though other non-physically demanding activities can generally be resumed as tolerated. After about eight weeks, all postoperative restrictions are typically lifted, which includes abdominal exercises, heavy lifting and other activities that may cause strain in the treatment area.

In the uncommon event that liposuction is the only abdominal procedure performed, recovery will often be much faster and easier. Most women feel comfortable enough to return to work, school and other non-strenuous activities within about four to seven days and all restrictions (with a few exceptions) are lifted approximately three weeks after the procedure.

What Results Can I Expect from a Mommy Makeover?

The objective of the Mommy Makeover procedure is to restore the post-baby physique as close to its pre-baby form as possible—or even better, in some areas. However, as any experienced plastic surgeon knows, it is just as important to produce effects that look “natural.” Throughout his more than three-decade-long career, Dr. Turkeltaub has acquired extensive knowledge of and experience with the female anatomy, having helped countless mothers achieve their dream figure. As such, he is able to consistently produce results that enhance the appearance while emphasizing natural beauty.

It is also important to note that the results of certain treatments may take longer to appear than others. This can be due to the amount of post-surgical swelling, the specifics of the procedure or simply the fact that every patient heals according to their own timeline. For instance, seeing the more long-term results of liposuction can take up to six months or longer. With a tummy tuck, though the tightening and sculpting effects are evident immediately, it can also take from six months to a year for the swelling to maximally subside.

Will My Mommy Makeover Scars Be Obvious?

The appearance and visibility of scarring after a Mommy Makeover will be greatly influenced by the particular surgical procedures performed. Possible incision locations for the most common Mommy Makeover treatment options are highlighted below.

  • Breast Augmentation – On or near the crease beneath the breasts (inframammary incision); around the lower margin of the areola (periareolar incision); or in the armpit (transaxillary incision).
  • Breast Lift – Along the upper margin of the areola (crescent incision); around the entire perimeter of the areola (circumareolar incision); around the areola and down the underside of the breast to the inframammary fold (lollipop incision); or around the areola, vertically down the breast and horizontally along the inframammary crease (inverted-T incision).
  • Breast Reduction – Circumferentially around the areola, down to the inframammary fold and horizontally along the crease (inverted-T incision). There are other techniques/incision options for breast reduction but Dr. Turkeltaub rarely employs these methods due to their limited ability to precisely reduce and re-contour breast tissue for an optimal outcome.
  • Tummy Tuck – Low across the pubis and extending outward above the groin. (The incision for a mini tummy tuck is also located low along the pubis but is shorter in length.)
  • Liposuction – In or near the area(s) from which fat is being removed. Liposuction incisions are very small—about 1/4 to 3/8 inch—and can often be strategically placed in naturally concealed locations.

The exact incision location for each procedure will be determined on an individual basis, but Dr. Turkeltaub’s careful surgical technique and meticulous wound closure methods help to minimize the appearance of the ultimate scars. Furthermore, specific instructions are given for how to properly care for the incisions in order for you to obtain the best possible outcome. In the end, virtually all scars from a typical Mommy Makeover can be concealed by numerous articles of clothing, including many swimsuit and underwear varieties.

How Much Does a Mommy Makeover Cost?

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the average cost of a Mommy Makeover in the United States generally ranges between $10,000 and $20,000. This estimate may or may not include the surgeon’s fees, outpatient facility/hospital costs and the anesthesiologist’s fees.

Additionally, Mommy Makeover prices vary significantly due to the high degree of customization involved with treatment. Components that have the greatest impact on total cost include the specific procedures performed, whether treatment is completed in one surgery or multiple stages, complexity of the operation(s), fees for the surgical venue and anesthesia, the skill and experience of the plastic surgeon and the city/region of the country in which the practice is geographically located. Additional factors such as pre- and post-operative medicines, post-surgical garments and potential medical testing can also affect pricing.

To receive a personalized quote for a Mommy Makeover, Dr. Turkeltaub will need to personally meet with you for a consultation. During this visit, he can review your cosmetic concerns and goals, recommend potential treatment options and formulate an individualized surgical plan based on all applicable information. Once a plan is agreed upon, an itemized breakdown of all costs related to surgery can be provided for your review.

“I wanted to thank you for your time, concern and help for such a personal decision. You made me feel as comfortable as possible and even kept a sense of humor with my children. This surgery has been contemplated for years with one of the biggest concerns being the doctor. But following my last medically necessary surgical procedure with you, my husband and I finally knew who would do this elective procedure. As a patient who has seen many offices from M.D.’s to Pediatricians to specialists, your office is by far the best from the receptionist to the doctor.
Again, thank you.”
